The Problem

Whenever I would try to upload a file, whether it be to my blog at blogger, articles here on Hubpages, at Box.net where I store some files, to email at both Yahoo or Gmail, or Facebook, my browser would crash to desktop. Every Browser - Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer, and Opera - would all produce the same, repeatable crash. This was crippling me. The odd thing was that this would only happen on one of my computers. My other computers were just fine.

Understanding The Problem

The error would occur after I clicked the "browse" or "choose" button to go find the file I was wanting to upload. From there I would select the file. Then the browser would crash.

I searched the internet and literally thousands of others were having the same problem and nobody provided a clear, concise clear solution. I updated my video card. I updated Shockwave. I updated Flash Player. I made sure I had all my Windows updates. I updated everything. After days of updates and restarts, my computer was still crashing to desktop every time I tried to upload a photo or file to the internet.

I am unable to explain what is causing the problem. My theory is that that it has something to do with Windows File Service interacting with Shockwave. This causes a memory leakage. Once in a while I would get a lucky first upload off only to be continually stifled with future crashes until I rebooted my computer to attempt to get another lucky one up.

Internet Explorer Example. See the little red box. That's the button you need to select to change the display settings. This view will cause a crash.

Crash No More

But I can give a workaround. It's actually really simple. I don't understand why it works, but I have been crash free since this change a week ago.

While in the file system preparing to upload, after selecting "browse" or "search" to begin the process of uploading your file or image, you must change your view from one that shows thumbnails to "details" or "list." It's up to your preference. Currently, you are set on either "small icons", "medium icons", "large icons", or "extra large icons". This is causing the crash.

The button to change this setting is found in Internet Explorer by clicking the third icon from the left above the file box on the right when enter into Windows File System to select the file to upload. For Google Chrome, it is the icon to the right above the file window. I have included two images of those browser upload boxes to show you. So before uploading, change the way the computer displays the file system.

Now you should be crash free. It seems so simple that it shouldn't work, but it does. Happy crash free uploading!
